Highly Tailored TMS with MeRT Can Bring Balance to Your Brain — and Improve Your Life!
MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment protocol that uses precise diagnostics and tailored TMS to achieve spectacular results for a variety of brain conditions.
The Brain Spine Pain Institute of Lake Nona, Orlando FL is an official Brain Treatment Center for Magnetic a-Resonance Therapy (MeRT)
Your Brain is Unique. That’s Why Tailored TMS Treatment is Unique to YOU.
Your brain is a marvel, containing approximately 100 billion nerve cells (neurons). These neurons communicate via brainwaves on specific pathways in your brain. And the more often your brain uses a pathway, the stronger that pathway gets.
But when forces—either internal or external—disrupt brain activity, these pathways can weaken or become completely unused. Examples of these forces can include:
- Trauma to the head, such as a concussion
- Emotional trauma or high amounts of chronic or acute stress
- Illness or disease such as stroke or Parkinson’s
- Depression or Major Depressive Disorder
- PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder)
- Dementia
Some people can still function after experiencing one or more of these forces. For others, however, life becomes unbearable. But there is a solution: By restoring the unused, weakened pathways through a tailored form of TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) called MeRT, we can bring balance to the brain.

Some of the Conditions Treated with MeRT
MeRT has been used very successfully for the treatment of Autism, Depression, PTSD, Stroke Recovery, head injuries, and other neurological conditions.

Autism
No matter where someone is on the spectrum, we offer cutting-edge treatment protocols that can improve symptoms.

Depression
Drug-free, non-invasive treatment for Depression, Major Depressive Disorder, and Treatment-Resistant Depression.

Stroke Recovery
A stroke can cause long-term neurological issues that require treatment to help recover function. MeRT can aid in recovery.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
PTSD can be the result of extreme stress or trauma that can have lasting effects. Treatment can help restore function.

Cognitive Decline and Memory Issues
We evaluate and treat a variety of memory and cognitive disorders — from mild cognitive impairment to dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Traumatic Brain Injuries and Concussions
Traumatic Brain Injuries or Concussions can have lasting adverse effects, but treatment can greatly improve the symptoms.

The Components of MeRT
We customize MeRT for each patient’s unique brain. We begin with complete diagnostics and use the results to design a tailored TMS treatment protocol.
Diagnostics
To determine exactly what’s happening in your brain, we perform a qEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram), also called a “brain map.” We also perform an EKG to measure brain-heart coherence.
Once we have the results of the initial testing, we use a scientific and patented approach to analyze them. Based on this analysis, we develop a treatment plan customized to your specific condition.
Tailored TMS
Once your treatment plan is in place, you’ll receive tailored TMS therapy five days a week in two-week intervals. In each session, you’ll sit in a comfortable chair while a highly trained technician places a magnetic coil on your head. There’s no pain or discomfort involved: the device simply brings about mild electrical signals in the targeted areas of the brain.
As you progress through your daily treatments, we’ll monitor your progress concurrently. In so doing, we can confirm how you feel and track improvements. Then, after two weeks of treatment, we will perform another series of tests to review your progress and make any needed modifications.
If there is a positive response to treatment, we’ll schedule additional treatment in two-week intervals. Most conditions require six to eight weeks of MeRT treatment for the best results.

In his current role, he is the Founder and Medical Director of the Brain, Spine, and Pain Institute of Lake Nona in Orlando, Florida, and the Brain Treatment Center of Orlando.
Dr. Mbeo is a member of :
- The American Academy of Neurology (AAN),
- Society for Critical Care Medicine (SCCM),
- Neurocritical Care Society (NCS), and
- Clinical Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Society (CTMSS).
He has published several articles in national and international publications.
Founder and Medical Director
Gilbert Mbeo, MD is a triple board-certified physician who specializes in Neurology, NeuroIntensive Care, and Interventional Pain Management, with over 13 years of experience providing evidence-based, high-quality care to patients with acute neurological needs including acute stroke, neuromuscular respiratory failure, status epilepticus, and brain and spinal cord trauma.
Dr. Mbeo is a Neurointensivist, meaning that not only does he have an in-depth understanding of neurology and neurological conditions, but his expertise is in the care of critically ill neurologic patients with acute brain, spine, and neuromuscular disorders. This specialty is also referred to as neurologic intensive care, critical care neurology, and neurocritical care.
As a Neurointensivist, Dr. Mbeo saw firsthand the life-changing consequences of brain injuries such as head trauma, strokes, and other brain injuries. He was troubled by the fact that, even though with modern medicine we are getting better at saving lives, many patients with brain injury were left with severe disabilities.
His vision was to establish a state-of-the-art facility where cutting-edge interventions would be used to enhance neurological recovery in patients and this is exactly why he founded the Brain, Spine, Pain Institute of Lake Nona in Orlando, Florida.
After learning about the brain healing effects of neuromodulation Dr. Mbeo established the Brain Treatment Center Orlando as an additional treatment department in his clinic in order to use interventions like cognitive rehabilitation, Magnetic Resonance Therapy (MeRT), and transcranial magnetic stimulation as non-invasive treatment options for an array of neurological conditions.

Dr. Erik Won, President of Wave Neuroscience, spoke about the effectiveness of MeRT on the Broken Brain podcast.
“What we’ve learned is that everyone has a unique frequency or unique signature.”
“All of us during our waking hours [have] an alpha frequency where our brain most comfortably operates. It’s a cycle rate where we’re all somewhere between 8 and 13 Hertz.
“You might be, for example, an 11.4 Hertz brain. I might be an 8.9 Hertz brain. And somebody else might be a 10.3 Hertz brain. It’s just kind of where we’re born.
“But when we get these brain images — whether through the physical trauma of a blast injury, the chemical trauma of years of drug use, or the emotional trauma of seeing a loved one pass away — we may find areas of the brain that are not cycling at the same rate as the rest of our cortex.
“And [we] try to stimulate it and remind it that it wants to fire at a certain frequency and a certain rate.”
What Makes Tailored TMS using MeRT so Effective?
MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) is so effective because of several unique factors.

FDA-cleared
Currently, rTMS is FDA-approved to treat Major Depressive Disorder and OCD and is used off-label for many other conditions. We are hopeful that it will soon be approved to treat PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Drug-Free
MeRT is non-pharmacological, and many of those treated with MeRT for their depression have been able to go off of their medications after treatment. (Results may vary based on the individual user and are not guaranteed.)

Customized
With thorough initial diagnostic testing (qEEG and EKG), we can see precisely where your brain may be out of communication or not functioning properly. Based on this information, we tailor your TMS treatment to address those precise areas.

Non-Invasive
TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) is a non-invasive form of therapy, where we use magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. It’s so gentle that you will simply feel a slight tapping on your head while undergoing treatment.
